Eternal Childhood Crush #3: River Phoenix as Chris Chambers in Stand By Me
Can I just begin by saying that one of the most upsetting moments in my childhood was realizing River Phoenix was no longer alive? My mother rented a copy of Stand By Me on VHS for her students to watch and I spent the evening watching it alone in the television room of our house in Oak Park. Afterwards, I was so excited and enthralled by River Phoenix. I imagined there were boys in real life who were like Chris Chambers, the perfect combination of street smarts and sensitivity. He cared for his friends but knew when to call them out on their bullshit. He was intelligent and kind and sigh, could it have gotten any better? He was perfect. Perfect. And the end:

Gordie: I’ll see ya.Chris: Not if I see you first.

Every. Time. It gets me everytime and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Stand By Me at least 50 times. I pretty much lose it at that moment and I’m okay with that, I suppose.
After that first viewing, my older sister came home from gymnastics practice and I told her about the film, about Chris Chambers, about how perfect and relatable it was. And she said…she said:

Isn’t that guy dead?

That might have been the first time I experienced heartbreak, and it was for an actor I’d just learned of hours beforehand.
But Chris Chambers, God, what an amazing character. What a perfect crush.
