From my ongoing Tumblr project, Power Shoulders

I was indifferent towards image-based tumblrs until a re-emerging love of Roisin Murphy coincided with an essay I wrote for Refinery29. Image tumblrs allow the “curator” to explore particular ideas, themes, or aesthetics in a constant stream. For myself, I’ve begun to recognize the many instances in which the “power shoulder” enters my everyday life. This wasn’t an aesthetic I was just drawn to on my own. It was something I remembered from my mother and aunt from my childhood. And now, it is an aesthetic that graces some of my favorite performers or is created by my favorite designers. I don’t think this is just a coincidence. There is a strength, character, and eclecticism that I am drawn to again and again, whether visually, aurally or texturally.
