Jezebel.com’s description of the video above:
“A video created by a 16-year-old girl named Crystal, who says, “I need some help. I didn’t want to do it this way, but it’s the only way I know that’s going to work, that someone out there in the world is gonna listen to me.” Crystal explains that a 23-year-old man has raped and drugged her and the Florida State attorney won’t prosecute him.”
My description:
According to this CNN story, the Florida State attorney refuses to prosecute the rapist because she was “one month shy of turning sixteen”, the age in Florida when she could consent to sex.
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
Since WHEN does the law refuse to respect age limits? If this young woman was drinking one month shy of 21, would prosecuters say it was OK because she’s “close enough to 21 anyway?”
The fact that this young girl feels her only possibe outlet is strangers on Youtube is a damning indictment of the few, few resources our society makes available to young rape victims.
Obviously, rape is a serious allegation. Of course, it is possible that we do not know all of the facts of Crystal’s case. If we assume that Crystal was raped, however, then the justice system has failed this young woman
Shame, shame, shame, America.
So stabby. Feeling so stabby.
