“Spirits” by Jamie Woon
This edited version of “Spirits” is not only better than the original, it is also one of Woon’s sharpest and loveliest tracks on mirrorwriting. When I become more than a little infatuated with an album or musician, I tend to read as many interviews and articles featuring the artist, in the hopes that the many thoughts and ideas running through my mind when listening to the record are at least somewhat accurate. In many of Woon’s recent interviews, he’s noted that mirrorwriting is meant to sound calming and soothing. If that is the case, then “Spirits” invokes this idea lyrically and rhythmically. Woon conjures silky moods and keeps the listener settled from note to note.
